Size wise how does it compare to the 787?

Honestly I’m surprised to learn it hasn’t flown yet. When I did the factory tour in August, they had one (in a customer livery) that looked to be finished from the outside.

The fuselage of the 787 is quite big, this thing is going to be huge.

But does it have WIFI and will it be free on my flights? These are the important questions.

Depends on if you are flying Spi rit Air or Delta.

The engine on the 787 is the same diameter as the fuselage of the 737. The GE9X for the 777X is bigger .

A bit better today. Felt like crap this morning, but didn’t sleep well either. Interesting news out of your neck of the woods this morning as far as all this goes....

WOW. I though the A380 was huge. I can’t wait to see one in person.

It’s c omparable in size to the original 777. 777-900 is less than 10 feet longer than a 777-300, with 20 foot longer wingspan that includes folding wingtips to fit into all the same gates as other 777 s .

A380 is larger in nearly every dimension, except total length . 777-900, the variant flying today is longer than an A380, But fuselage diameter, wingspan, height, etc are all larger on the a380. Really it will only look new and exciting because of the folding wingtips, otherwise will blend in with previous  777s pretty well.

Yeah, I walked in on some of our grad students in the library wearing masks. It doesn’t help, but I guess it makes them feel better.

You’re one who could answer without any hysteria. Is this any worse than any other flu-like virus that one might get? Is the hype because it’s new, or is there really reason for concern?

I checked on the CDC website before answering, and it’s pretty much what I thought. This is a newly isolated member of the coronavirus family, which produces flu-like symptoms. Evidence seems to point to person-to-person transmission, and propensity for aerosol transmission (through sneezing and coughing) doesn’t seem to be fully determined.

The problem with viruses like these is not that they are objectively “worse” than say normal flu strains that are already in our population. It’s more that they are new, and therefore the population is susceptible. Public health response is typically going to be to try and isolate infected people and determine its origins to limit spread, not because it’s a threat to species survival like a 28 Days Later type of zombie virus or a Mutaba-like virus from a Dustin Hoffman movie, but more because it’s a shitty illness that causes sickness and misery and can end up killing a percentage of infected patients. No one needs another of those.

So, the thing to do is not to panic, but to make sure everyone practices good hygiene. Wash your hands frequently. Use hand sanitizer when you come in contact with foreign surfaces in public or shake hands with someone (who may not have washed his hands), and if you’re sick, stay home. If you’re really sick, see your doctor.   If you have to go out, cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough.

Great explanation. Thanks! I’ll share this with my son. He was reading about the 1918 flu pandemic this morning.

I read the intro to the Wiki article about it. This caught my attention:

I n contrast, a 2007 analysis of medical journals from the period of the pandemic found that the viral infection was no more aggressive than previous influenza strains. Instead, malnourishment, overcrowded medical camps and hospitals, and poor hygiene promoted bacterial superinfection. This superinfection killed most of the victims, typically after a somewhat prolonged death bed.

Yuck. I’ve always said that hospitals are a great place to get sick. But those were more like squalid death camps by many accounts. And of course, that was in the days before antibiotics.  My mother was born in 1940, and it is my recollection that she told me that all the adults in her life knew somebody—friend, family member, acquaintance— who had died in that pandemic.

Even today, the most common cause of flu-associated death is bacterial superinfection.

I have always said that the hospital is where you go to get treatment, not to get well.

I spent a lot of hours watching a parked 777 today. I’m home sick today, so it wasn’t that big a deal.

Its just over 250ft. long, about 12ft longer than an A380 and a few inches longer than a 747, but, as with ships, there’s a lot more to measuring  the size of a plane than just overall length.

It was good to see it fly today. I hope development goes smoothly.

I’m under the weather today and planted watching the 24 Hours of Daytona.
